The overall aim of the MFL department is to inspire and love of languages. The school teaches French as its first modern foreign language.
Pupils begin in the Nursery and continue with French throughout their time at Thorngrove. Four years ago, the MFL department introduced two further European languages, German and Spanish. German is taught to Year 4 and Spanish to Y3 pupils during the Summer Term in place of French.
Children can continue to practise and enjoy these languages through clubs further up the school. In Year 7, children enjoy a ‘total immersion’ week in France. They practise speaking French at the local markets and in the local shops and are taught by French teachers. This prepares them well for the speaking and listening part of the French CE paper.
