Nursery and Lower School

These formative years are critical in every child’s development.  You can trust us to give your children the best possible start.

Thorngrove Nursery (ages 2½ to 4+) aims to provide a happy and stimulating environment for children from the age of 2 ½ embarking on this first important step in their education.  The structured programme of work covers a wide variety of topic work, often related to basic literacy and numeracy.  They are planned to ensure that the children have a wide range of topics linked to the Early Years Foundation Curriculum.  The children’s concentration and listening skills develop and they learn to interact with one another.  Group times are sociable and great favourites, especially physical education, cookery and music.  The natural progression from Nursery to Form 1 at the age of 4+ is something the children look forward to with excitement and parents can feel rest assured that their children are well-prepared for the rigours of school life.

In the Lower School (ages 4+ to 7) teaching will cover Literacy, Numeracy, Topic Work, French, Art and Design, Music, Drama, Physical Education and Games.  In support of early literacy we use Read Write Inc. which is a systematic phonics programme.  This is introduced to children in Form 1 and is carried through to the end of the Lower School.  We know that children at this stage absorb knowledge very readily and need to be kept motivated by fresh and stimulating teaching and resources.  The children are given opportunities to explore the extensive grounds and use facilities like the Sports Hall, Art room, and Astroturf.
